The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, family, fraternal service
organization. Our 1.6 million members and their families are dedicated to
the ideals of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. We work to
benefit our communities, Church and fellow man. In the past ten years
alone, Knights have worked effectively on programs to benefit countless
others in need, donating more than $972 million and providing nearly 421
million hours of volunteer community service.
To fully appreciate the dynamics of the Knights of Columbus, we take a
step back in time to the 1880s. At this time many European immigrants
were arriving in our country. Catholic Immigrants were a despised
minority. They were given the lowest paid, menial and most often,
dangerous jobs. Poverty, disease and accidents took their toll, often
resulting in the loss of the breadwinner. This was a time when a Catholic
Man had tremendous pressure to abandon his faith simply to find basic
security for his family.
At Saint Mary's Church in New Haven, CT., Father Michael J. McGivney
decided to respond. In 1882 he brought together the concerned men of his
Parish to form the Knights of Columbus. They were chartered to serve and
provide financial aid and assistance to their members and their members'
families.
Father McGivney had two goals. First, to provide insurance protection to
his parishioners at the lowest
possible cost. Second to make no profit. These ideals are still with us
today. Insurance proceeds are returned to our insured members as
dividends and used toward the first principle or our order: Charity. The
Knights of Columbus is about one family helping another. As a Fraternal
Insurance Company, the Knights of Columbus has grown into a pillar of
strength. Currently, we are one of very few insurance companies with the
highest (superior) rating from both A.M. Best and Standard & Poor.
